Providing work placement opportunities to students and young people.

Work placement opportunities are a mutually beneficial partnership between employers and students where the student is given the opportunity to learn the skills of a trade, develop those skills through experience, and understand what it’s like to be part of the workforce.

Students who are enrolled in a Vocational Education and Training (VET) subject, whether through school or TAFE, are required to complete a work placement program in years 11 and 12. This typically requires a minimum of 70 hours of mandatory structured work placement during the final two years of schooling to complete the student’s Higher School Certificate (HSC).

As an employer, your participation in providing local youth with work placement not only benefits the students and the local community but your business as well.

  • Support and participation: Your involvement in offering work placement opportunities mean you take an active role in the education, career development, and vocational training of local youths.
  • Mentorship: Students placed in your business have the opportunity to learn about your industry, it’s career paths, and future directions of that industry.
  • Build desirable employees: As you promote the attitudes and skills desired in your workplace, you are establishing the expectation for future employees.
  • Community involvement: Work placement is a direct way to support and become more involved in your local community as placement helps to foster relationships with young people.
  • Staff development: As your staff works with students, they develop the skills of supervising, training, and mentoring within your business.
  • Business profile: Investing in the community and supporting local youths is a powerful and meaningful way to raise your business profile.
